On Fuel Restrictions, Residents Request Prioritisation for Work Use
TANGERANG, KOMPAS.com - Residents believe that restricting fuel oil (BBM) is more appropriate than raising prices, as long as its use is prioritised for work needs.
One ride-hailing driver, Latif (46), said that restrictions are not a problem as long as BBM is used for productive activities, such as work or business.
“If you ask me, the main point is that if it’s to be restricted, it should be in a reasonable way. If it’s for business or work, why not, no problem,” said Latif when met by Kompas.com in Gading Serpong, Kelapa Dua, Tangerang Regency, on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
According to him, BBM use for non-urgent activities, such as sightseeing, should be reduced.
“If it’s for sightseeing, then reduce it. Especially if one family brings many cars, that can actually be curbed,” he said.
“From each individual, what is truly beneficial. If it’s not needed, then don’t use it,” said Latif.
In line with Latif, another resident, Iqbal (29), believes that BBM restrictions need to be targeted appropriately so as not to burden small communities.
According to him, the policy must still consider groups of people who depend on their income from vehicle use.
“It’s fine to restrict it, but it must be clear who is prioritised. Don’t let workers face difficulties,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Downstream Regulatory Body (BPH Migas) has issued regulations on restricting the purchase of subsidised fuel oil (BBM), effective from 1 April 2026.
The regulation is contained in the Decision of the Head of BPH Migas Number 024/KOM/BPH.DBBM/2026, signed by the Head of BPH Migas Wahyudi Anas on 30 March 2026.
This policy is the result of a Limited Cabinet Meeting on 28 March 2026. The government is preparing anticipatory measures against energy crisis risks amid conflicts in the Middle East.
The government considers that energy efficiency needs to be strengthened. Restrictions on BBM purchases are seen as one of the control instruments.
“Based on considerations, it is necessary to establish the Decision of the Head of BPH Migas on Controlling the Distribution of Certain Types of Fuel Oil, namely Diesel Oil (Gasoil) and Special Assignment Fuel Oil Type Petrol (Gasoline) RON 90 by assigned business entities for motor vehicle transportation for passenger and/or goods transport,” states the decision.
