On Electric Motorcycle Conversion Safety: Must Have Standard Certification

JAKARTA – The issue of safety is the primary concern in the trend of converting petrol-fuelled motorcycles to electric ones, which is currently developing in Indonesia. Amid the push for energy transition, the safety aspects of these modified vehicles cannot be ignored.

As public interest increases, fundamental questions arise regarding the safety of converted electric motorcycles for daily activities, particularly concerning the batteries and electrical systems.

According to Wahyu Budhi, Training Analyst and Technical Analyst at PT Wahana Makmur Sejati (WMS), safety can truly be maintained as long as the conversion process is carried out in accordance with applicable standards.

He explained that the Battery Management System (BMS) plays a crucial role in keeping the battery condition stable.

This system functions to control charging to prevent excess (overcharge), while also maintaining the battery temperature within safe limits, thereby reducing the risk of damage or fire.

In addition, resistance to water is also an important concern, especially considering Indonesia’s road conditions often marked by heavy rain and flooding.

Therefore, the electrical components on converted motorcycles are recommended to have at least IP65 or IP67 certification to remain safe when exposed to water.

Wahyu also emphasised that the conversion process must not be done haphazardly. The work must be carried out by workshops that have official certification from the relevant ministry to ensure all installation procedures meet safety standards.

“If done carelessly, the risks will certainly increase. That’s why conversions cannot be done arbitrarily; they must go through workshops that are already certified,” he said.

With the proper application of standards, the risks on converted electric motorcycles are deemed to be able to be significantly reduced. This means these vehicles remain safe for daily activities, as long as they are supported by good workmanship quality and maintenance.
