On capital punishment

On capital punishment

From Jurnal Indonesia

Tangerang District Court's decision to hand out the death penalty to a drug dealer deserves to be hailed. In the midst of legal uncertainties, there are still judges who make determined verdicts, and ones in accordance with the law.

For a long time drug dealers and users have only received light sentences, triggering people to distribute drugs like shabu-shabu, heroin, marijuana and the like. That is why drugs have widely spread everywhere.

Illegal drugs are a very big concern. Drugs are not only abused by the haves but also by the have-nots, even by teenagers and children. Parents are worried if their children are trapped in a circle of drug abuse.

The wide spread of drugs can be seen from the cases of Maya Sigit, wife of Ari Sigit, grandson of former president Soeharto. We're not surprised as with enormous wealth drug's are not hard to get.

How about Doyok and Polo, both entertainers by profession. Not to mention about other cases undetected so far, because the victims are not public figures worth reporting on. The number of drug victims cannot possibly be counted, but it's quite big.

The destructive impact of drug abuse is whopping. Addicts can kill themselves by overdosing.

Addicts can't control themselves and become a burden on their parents. And to get them free of drugs, very large amounts of money are required.

Drug abuse by the younger generation is fatal as the nation's future is in their hands. If they become drug addicts, what good can be expected from them?

Considering the fatal impact of and the disaster brought about by drug abuse, I fully agree if capital punishment is imposed on drug dealers, because they are the state's most dangerous enemies.

In other countries heavy punishments for drug dealers are not something strange. Now is the time for Indonesia to apply heavy punishments as well. And it's appropriate if relevant institutions and other communities support this. Hopefully, the application of capital punishment on drug dealers does not cause pros and cons. It would be a great pity if capital punishment is revoked.
