On Blacklist, Fate of US Weapons Supplier Anthropic Dire

Anthropic faces a dire situation after standing up to the Trump administration. Once a supplier partner for AI tools for military purposes, the company is now facing severe restrictions and has been placed on a supply chain risk blacklist.

On Wednesday (11 March), Anthropic filed for a stay from the US appeals court after the Pentagon designated the company as a supply chain risk, pending judicial review of the matter.

Anthropic has openly stated that the supply chain risk designation could result in company revenue losses of up to billions of dollars.

Anthropic’s request for a stay came after it confronted the Pentagon. The company has firmly refused to allow its AI tools to be used for creating autonomous weapons and for surveilling US citizens.

The Pentagon believed there should be no restrictions on how Anthropic’s AI tools are used, as long as they remain within legal bounds. Anthropic’s hardline stance has also infuriated Trump, who has called the company a dangerous left-wing “woke” corporation that endangers American lives.

Trump stated he would not allow Anthropic or any other company to dictate how the US military fights and wins wars. Anthropic was known to have received a major government contract worth US$200 billion in 2025.

Anthropic insists it only wants its AI tools used for US military defence, not for creating autonomous weapons. Because of this stance, Trump has banned federal agencies from using Anthropic’s AI.

However, according to an internal memo reported by Reuters, the Pentagon said it would provide a six-month transition period for Anthropic use. It was also stated that Anthropic’s AI tools would only be used for urgent requirements.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Anthropic’s tools were still being used in the US-Israel conflict against Iran just hours after Trump banned use of the company’s AI.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

The AI company separately filed an initial lawsuit earlier this week in federal court in California to challenge the Pentagon’s blacklist. In a filing to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Wednesday (11 March), Anthropic stated that the Pentagon’s supply chain designation would cause the company “irreparable harm.”

According to Anthropic’s court filing, more than 100 of its customers have contacted the company regarding the supply chain risk designation.

“Based on Anthropic’s best estimates, for 2026, the government’s harmful actions risk causing revenue losses of hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars,” wrote Anthropic’s lawyers.
