Jakarta, VIVA – The status of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) in the Sunda Strait waters remains at Level III (Watch) based on the recommendation of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

Deni Mardiono, head of the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in Pasauran, said that residents and visitors are prohibited from approaching the Mount Anak Krakatau area, as it is still dangerous.

Officials only recommend keeping a distance of at least three kilometres from the Mount Anak Krakatau area.

“We hope that residents and tourists will comply with this prohibition,” said Deni in Anyer, Banten, on Monday, 7 September 2026.

Abang, an official at the Pasir Putih tourist site in the Carita Beach area of Pandeglang, said that in recent days the number of visitors has appeared sparse, particularly due to the impact of increased activity from Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK).

Usually, tourists flock to the area every weekend, but now it is quiet with only a handful of visitors.

“For the past seven days we have had relatively few visitors here,” said Abang.

Likewise, Fatimah, manager of the Carita Beach tourist site, acknowledged that visitor numbers had dwindled owing to the effects of the GAK eruption, leaving prospective visitors fearful.

Nevertheless, based on experience of the 2018 tsunami disaster, the Carita Beach tourist site has historically attracted plenty of visitors.

The panorama of the Carita Beach area on Banten’s western coast is quite beautiful and natural, possessing its own uniqueness and appeal.

Moreover, Carita Beach is very easy to reach by vehicle and is not far from Jakarta.

“We are confident that visits to Carita Beach will increase within a month,” she said. (Ant)
