Omita wins two golds

JAKARTA (JP): Southeast Asian Games champion Omita Olga Ompi swept to two gold medals in kata (martial arts performance) on the opening day of the fifth KASAD (Army Chief of Staff) Cup karate tournament at the Senayan indoor tennis stadium yesterday.

Omita led sister Vera and Julien Tangka to win the women's team kata with a score of 25.7. The trio, representing the INKAI team, performed their favorite Sochin movements.

Jakarta trio of Merani Mega, Fitria Mega and Trimurti took the silver with 25.2 points, while South Sulawesi's Yuniarti Rahman, Fajar Istiqomah and Rahmawati won the bronze on 25.1.

Omita was equally masterful in the kata individual, winning the event with 25.8 points. The silver went to Vera Simatupang from the Bank Bumi Daya team who scored 25.6, and the bronze to South Sulawesi's Yuniarti Rahman who recorded 25.3.

Other SEA Games gold medalists, the men's trio of Aswan Ali, Wahyu and Elias Tande, finished first in the men's team kata with 25.6 points.

A total of 596 karate athletes are taking part in the tournament which winds up tomorrow. (emf)
