Oman lodges protest with Iran over drone attack
Muscat (ANTARA) - Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country summoned the Iranian ambassador to deliver a formal note of protest over drone attacks targeting locations in the provinces of Musandam and Al Wusta.
In a statement on Sunday, the ministry said Oman expressed deep concern over what it described as irresponsible actions.
Oman also stressed the need to respect national sovereignty, the principles of good neighbourliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and the norms governing relations between the two neighbouring states.
Earlier on Sunday, Oman condemned the drone attacks and pledged to take all necessary measures to protect the security and safety of its citizens and residents.
Oman also warned that the ongoing military escalation threatens regional security, maritime safety, international trade and global energy supplies. It further called on all parties to exercise restraint, halt the escalation and implement understandings reached through diplomatic efforts.
The development comes amid rising tensions after the United States launched a series of new attacks on several Iranian military targets on Sunday.
In retaliation, Iran struck American bases and facilities at various locations across the Gulf region, signalling a sharp escalation despite the two sides having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June.
Iranian media reported that the attacks targeted US military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said it had struck logistical support and refuelling facilities for US Navy vessels at Duqm Port in Oman.
