Oman and Iran discuss freedom of navigation in Strait of Hormuz
Oman and Iran have held talks on the principles of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, according to the Omani Foreign Ministry on Sunday (24 May).
The discussions took place in Muscat between Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi.
The ministry stated the meeting followed Gharibabadi conveying a message from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding regional developments and Iran-US negotiations mediated by Pakistan.
According to the ministry’s statement, the Omani and Iranian delegations then held broader discussions on the principles governing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz under international law.
Both delegations also exchanged views on the need to build and enhance capabilities to ensure maritime security, trade, and supply chains.
The statement added that both parties discussed efforts to restore safe and sustainable freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Tasnim news agency reported that a potential memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States includes a ceasefire across all fronts, including Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
The report also stated Washington would commit to easing sanctions on Iranian oil during ongoing negotiations.
If an agreement is reached, the Strait of Hormuz will not fully return to pre-war conditions, but the number of vessels allowed to pass will be restored to pre-conflict levels within 30 days.
Tasnim also reported Iran emphasising the implementation of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz through various means, with details to be announced later.
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (23 May) that a deal to end the war with Iran had been “largely negotiated” and was awaiting finalisation.
The breakthrough came after Pakistani military chief Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran, his second in recent weeks. Previously, the US and Iran had reached a ceasefire agreement through Pakistan-mediated talks.
