Olive Oil Shot Trend While Dieting Goes Viral, Nutritionists Warn About Calories
By Kompas.com - Olive oil is often regarded as a healthy everyday ingredient, including for weight-loss diets. Recently, the olive oil shot trend—drinking a single spoonful of olive oil straight—has gained traction on TikTok and Instagram. However, experts warn that olive oil still contains a relatively high number of calories, so consumption should be monitored, especially for those managing their weight.
Dr Jovita Amelia, Sp.GK, a clinical nutrition specialist at Ciputra Hospital Citra Garden, says that olive oil is indeed a source of healthy fats that are good for the body. ‘Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats that are healthier than saturated fats,’ she told Kompas.com on Thursday 9 April 2026.
Nevertheless, she emphasised that olive oil remains a high-energy source with calories. One tablespoon of olive oil contains around 119 calories. Therefore, if consumed regularly without accounting for total daily intake, the calories entering the body could increase unknowingly.
‘Olive oil is indeed good for health, but its best benefits are obtained when consumed as part of a balanced diet,’ Haas said. She also suggested that olive oil is better consumed with meals rather than drunk directly on an empty stomach.
Healthline report (4 August 2025) notes that extra virgin olive oil contains oleic acid, vitamin E, vitamin K, and polyphenols that are antioxidant in nature. The aforementioned constituents are considered beneficial for heart health and help protect the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Several studies also indicate that monounsaturated fats in olive oil can help provide longer-lasting satiety.
