Olive Oil and Lemon Shot Claimed to Aid Diet, Nutritionist Explains the Facts
The olive oil lemon shot trend has recently gained traction on social media as a quick method to assist weight loss. Many TikTok and Instagram users claim that a mixture of olive oil and lemon consumed first thing in the morning can curb appetite, improve digestion, and help the body burn fat more quickly. Doctors warn that the benefits of olive oil lemon shot for dieting are not yet fully supported by robust scientific evidence. Dr. Jovita Amelia, Sp.GK, a clinical nutrition specialist at RS Ciputra Citra Garden, says olive oil does contain healthy fats that are good for the body. ‘Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats that are healthier than saturated fats,’ she told Kompas.com on Thursday (9 April 2026). However, she stressed that olive oil is still high in calories, so consumption should be limited. Meanwhile, lemon is rich in vitamin C and flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies indicate that the healthy fats in olive oil can help promote satiety for longer, potentially leading to reduced daily intake. Vitamin C in lemon is also linked to the fat-burning process by contributing to the formation of carnitine, a compound that helps the body convert fat into energy. However, direct research on the weight-loss benefits of the olive oil and lemon mixture remains very limited. According to Tan, overall dietary patterns remain the most important factor. ‘There is no single ingredient that automatically causes weight loss if diet and lifestyle are not improved,’ said Dr. Tan in an interview with Kompas.com on Wednesday (8 April 2026).
