The Jakarta Provincial Government and the management of the Kota Tua area are preparing several development concepts as part of a revitalisation programme that will introduce electric tram tracks and the implementation of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

“One of our plans is to build an LEZ or Low Emission Zone. Therefore, we will restrict vehicle access once everything is completed,” said the Head of the Jakarta Kota Tua Area Management Unit, Denny Aputra, when met in Kota Tua, Jakarta, on Sunday.

Denny stated that this concept is part of an effort to establish Kota Tua as a world-class tourist destination while strengthening the historical identity of the area.

Furthermore, the Jakarta Provincial Government also plans to revive the tram mode of transport that once operated in the area. However, the planned trams will utilise electric power.

According to Denny, the tram route is planned to traverse the Kota Tua tourist area and connect to several strategic points, including the area near Sunda Kelapa. Nevertheless, the specific details of the route are awaiting further decisions from the government.

He explained that this development is part of a large-scale revitalisation of the Kota Tua area, aimed at combining elements of history, tourism, and environmentally friendly transportation.

Denny added that the revitalisation is being undertaken to revive the historical value of the area while simultaneously increasing tourist comfort.

“The Governor sees this as an initial mode of transport, rebuilding its history and ensuring that the 2029 Kota Tua revitalisation becomes a destination for Jakarta, a global city,” he said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is still prioritising the completion of the Lebak Bulus-Kota MRT project, which is targeted for completion in early 2029.
