Old hands cruise in Cigna Open tournament

JAKARTA (JP): Veteran players cruised into the second round of the 2001 Cigna Open Colors of Life tennis tournament on Tuesday at the Bung Karno tennis complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

Men's singles top seed and defending champion Andrian Raturandang had no trouble ousting qualifier Sudjiono Timan, who is also the Indonesian Tennis Association's (Pelti) official in charge of athletes development, 6-1, 6-1.

Second seed Febi Widhiyanto had a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 win over qualifier Wisnu Wijaya. Febi will next meet Tjahjono, who eliminated Hendri Davin Teja 6-3, 6-1.

Third seed Edy Kusdaryanto survived his first test against wild card Al Imron 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Edy will meet another wild card, Imanuel Prabowo, who defeated Claudio Bramanta 6-2, 6-2.

Fourth seed Yusmawan Fahmi ousted Donny Romy 6-0, 6-3 and will face qualifier Sunu Wahyu Trijati who survived a tough match with Hartono Simaji 7-5, 6-4.

Seeded no. 5, Sebastian Da Costa beat qualifier Tigor Kanigoro 6-2, 6-1 and will meet Irwan Radjab, who lost one match before defeating junior Nesa Artha 6-7 (0-7), 6-4, 6-3.

Former national player Yustedjo Tarik also reached the second round after easily beating Ferdi Fauzi 6-2, 6-3. Yustedjo will meet sixth seeded Surya Wijaya, who beat qualifier Invasi Afghan 6-2, 6-3.

In the women's side, only seventh seed Suci Bungaran failed to reach the next round. She bowed out to qualifier Dian Anggraini 5-7, 2-6.

Top seed and defending champion Wukirasih Sawondari convincingly overwhelmed Stella Sondang 6-0, 6-2 and will meet wild card enterer Lenny Komalasari, who beat Gina Fahaeyena 6-0, 6-2.

Second seeded Liza Andriyani had an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory over qualifier Nina Septrita. Liza will meet Ida Sutedja who beat Lidya Ivana Jaya 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Veteran women's player Eny Sulistyowati will meet junior Margaretha Novianti on Wednesday. Eny, third seeded in this event, beat Hening Wulani 6-0, 6-1 while Margaretha defeated Leonita Girsang 6-1, 6-4.

In the women's doubles, top seeded Angelique Widjaja and Dea Sumantri breezed through the quarterfinals after overcoming Dian Anggraini and Linda Arum Sari 6-1, 6-0.

Veteran Irawati Moerid Iskandar, partnering Lucky Tedjamukti, also progressed to the quarters after beating Eliza Rustandar and Suci Bungaran 6-0, 6-2. They will meet Rachmawati Siregar and Uce Verianti, who beat Dina Mardiana and Yulia Fitri 6-2, 6-1. (ivy)
