OKU Regent States Free Nutritious Meal Programme Drives Local Economy

Baturaja (ANTARA) - The Regent of Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU), South Sumatra, Teddy Meilwansyah, stated that the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme, initiated by President Prabowo Subianto, is driving the local economy.

“In addition to the circulation of money at the village level, producers such as farmers, livestock breeders, and traders also benefit from the implementation of the MBG programme,” said Regent Teddy Meilwansyah in Baturaja on Wednesday.

Producers are guaranteed a market through the presence of buyers in need of commodities, while the managers of the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) do not need to incur costs for shopping at markets.

According to the Regent, current data shows that there are 27 SPPG units operating in the local area to serve thousands of programme beneficiaries, ranging from students to the elderly, even in the remote villages of OKU Regency.

“Recently, we also inaugurated the operation of an SPPG managed by the OKU Police,” he added.

The Regent emphasised that the MBG programme is not merely about providing free meals, but possesses a wide-reaching multiplier effect for the community.

“This programme absorbs thousands of workers and stimulates the local economy, ranging from transportation and the trade of vegetables and basic necessities in traditional markets, to boosting agricultural, livestock, and fishery activities,” the Regent said.

He urged all parties not to view the programme solely from a political or educational perspective, but to understand the economic impact felt by the wider community.

“The MBG programme serves as a concrete step towards increasing public welfare while simultaneously strengthening the local economy,” he concluded.
