OKU Disaster Agency Clears Landslide Debris from Gunung Meraksa Village Road
Baturaja (ANTARA) — Personnel from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) regency, South Sumatra, have cleared landslide debris that blocked a road in Gunung Meraksa Village, Pengandonan sub-district, to prevent disruption to local community activities.
OKU BPBD head Januar Efendi, speaking through Operations Control Centre manager Gunalfi in Baturaja on Sunday, said that heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon (21 February) from 5.00pm local time through to the evening caused rocks and earth to collapse from a hillside.
Although there were no casualties, the landslide blocked the road connecting Pengandonan sub-district to Ulu Ogan sub-district in OKU regency.
“Thankfully there were no casualties, but the landslide temporarily disrupted vehicle traffic along that route,” he said.
During the evacuation process, OKU BPBD deployed one unit of heavy machinery to transport earth and rock debris to a disposal site.
“The evacuation process has been completed and community activities have returned to normal,” he explained.
He urged the public, particularly motorists, to exercise greater caution when travelling along the route in anticipation of further landslides to prevent casualties.
“We have also installed early warning signs around the landslide area to educate motorists to be more vigilant when passing through, especially during rainfall,” he said.
