OJK: Without Adequate Cyber Security, Innovation Becomes a New Source of Vulnerability for the Digital Economy
Jakarta, VIVA – The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has emphasised that the financial services industry and the digital economy must undergo a paradigm shift, from compliance-based security to resilience-based security.
OJK’s Executive Head for the Supervision of Financial Technology Service Institutions (ITSK) and Digital Financial Assets and Crypto Assets (IAKD), Adi Budiarso, stressed that cyber security cannot merely be fulfilled as a compliance obligation. Instead, it must become an integral part of business strategy, corporate governance, risk management, and consumer protection.
“Trust is the primary currency in the digital economy. The speed of innovation must go hand in hand with the strength of safeguards,” Adi stated in his remarks on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
“In other words, without adequate cyber security, innovation can instead become a new source of vulnerability for society and the industry,” he added.
Therefore, Adi encouraged all providers of financial sector technology innovations, digital financial assets, and crypto assets (IAKD) to position cyber security as a strategic investment.
In this regard, strengthening cyber security is seen as a key differentiator for industry players in building credibility, ensuring service continuity, and enhancing competitiveness amid the development of the digital economy.
“Cyber security is no longer just a technical issue, but a primary prerequisite for the sustainability of the digital financial industry,” Adi said.
He added that in an increasingly interconnected ecosystem, a single cyber incident does not only impact one institution but can affect the reputation, trust, and overall stability of the ecosystem.
Therefore, OJK also emphasised the importance of strengthening human resources (HR) in the digital financial sector. According to him, strong security technology must be supported by competencies, operational discipline, procedural readiness, as well as a culture of transparent and responsible incident reporting.
For information, from 27-29 April 2026, OJK in collaboration with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) held a cyber security workshop for ITSK providers. This activity aims to strengthen understanding, vigilance, human resource capacity, and the industry’s ability to prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from cyber incidents.
Through collaboration with BSSN, OJK continues to strengthen institutional synergies in building national cyber resilience, particularly in the digital financial services sector. This cross-institutional collaboration, according to OJK, is very important because cyber threats do not recognise sectoral boundaries, institutional boundaries, or jurisdictional boundaries.
