OJK: Total Assets of BPR-BPRS Grow by 3.70 Per Cent to Reach Rp236.69 Trillion as of March
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has recorded that the total assets of the Rural Bank (BPR) and Sharia Rural Bank (BPRS) industry experienced a year-on-year growth of 3.70 per cent, reaching Rp236.69 trillion as of March 2026. Credit and financing distribution within the BPR and BPRS industry grew by 2.83 per cent year-on-year to Rp176.96 trillion, supported by a 3.16 per cent increase in third-party funds (DPK) to Rp165.49 trillion.
OJK Executive Head of Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that this performance was bolstered by relatively strong capital adequacy to support risks. The aggregate Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) for the BPR and BPR Syariah industry was recorded at 27.20 per cent, significantly above regulatory requirements. According to the OJK, the industry continues to strengthen risk mitigation through good management and governance in credit distribution, intensive post-disbursement monitoring, and the formation of loss reserves in accordance with applicable regulations.
The OJK also noted that MSME credit/financing distribution by BPR and BPRS remained growing and maintained its quality, with its share reaching 50.07 per cent of total credit/financing as of March 2026. Despite this high composition, the OJK believes that such distribution can be further increased, including through cooperation with other financial service institutions. BPR and BPRS are also encouraged to participate actively in financing related to OJK programmes conducted alongside the Regional Financial Access Acceleration Team (TPAKD), such as anti-moneylender credit/financing (K/PMR) and agricultural sector credit/financing (K/PSP).
Dian warned that global and regional economic dynamics could pose challenges for BPR and BPRS. Furthermore, the massive development of information technology in the financial sector is impacting changes in public behaviour, expectations, and needs regarding banking services. The industry also faces intensifying competition, particularly in credit distribution to micro and small segments, accompanied by the potential for increased credit risk.
To address these challenges and follow the mandate of Law Number 4 of 2023 regarding the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (UU P2SK), Dian stated that the OJK has published the Roadmap for the Development and Strengthening of the BPR and BPRS Industry 2024-2027. Through structural and competitive strengthening, BPR and BPRS are expected to increase their business growth, anticipate economic volatility, and enhance industry competitiveness in performing their intermediary functions for the public and the MSME sector.
Regarding industry consolidation, the OJK reported that as of the end of April 2026, 57 BPR and BPRS have been approved for consolidation into 18 entities, while over 200 others are still in the licensing process for mergers or amalgamations with the OJK. Additionally, most BPR and BPRS have met the minimum core capital requirement of Rp6 billion. For those that have not, corporate actions such as capital injections and/or consolidation are being undertaken. To further support the role of regional banking, the OJK encourages synergy between BPR/BPRS and Regional Development Banks (BPD) through the consolidation of locally-owned BPR/BPRS under BPD. This synergy is expected to increase the banking sector’s contribution to micro-level credit and improve governance quality, thereby strengthening regional economic structures and national competitiveness.
