“God willing, we hope to achieve 98 percent financial inclusion in Indonesia by 2045,” Chair of the OJK Board of Commissioners, Friderica Widyasari Dewi, said at the Indonesia Savings Day event in Bekasi, West Java, on Friday.

According to Friderica, students and young people in higher education still lag behind the national average in financial literacy and inclusion.

This gap makes students a primary target for OJK’s efforts to improve financial literacy and inclusion.

“It is our collective responsibility, alongside regional leaders, to improve students’ financial literacy and inclusion across Indonesia,” she stated.

The 2026 National Financial Literacy and Inclusion Survey (SNLIK) shows that the financial literacy rate among students stood at 62.72 percent, below the national average of 69.57 percent.

Meanwhile, their financial inclusion rate reached 92.76 percent, which is below the national average of 93.61 percent.

Friderica highlighted the urgency of improving these indicators among youth given the sheer size of the youth demographic.

Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2025 shows there are approximately 88 million school- and college-aged individuals, accounting for roughly 31 percent of Indonesia’s total population of 287.2 million.

She noted that broad access to financial products and services must be accompanied by the ability to understand and use them wisely.

Furthermore, Friderica acknowledged that financial literacy challenges for the younger generation are mounting alongside seamless access to online shopping and digital financial services, which can encourage impulsive spending.

Therefore, she urged financial service providers to strengthen efforts to educate and protect consumers, including ensuring that prospective users have an income and fully understand the obligations associated with using financial products.

Additionally, she encouraged young people to build a saving habit early on, emphasizing that teaching early financial discipline is key to helping them manage their money wisely.
