OJK Reveals West Java Residents Are the Most Frequent Victims of Online Fraud
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has reported that residents of West Java are the most frequent victims of online fraud cases compared with other provinces in Indonesia. The cities and regencies with the highest number of fraud victims are Bekasi, Bandung, Bogor and Depok.
Director of Financial Services Institutions II at OJK West Java, Rianti Dwiyani, said that from November 2024 to June 2026, data from the Indonesia Anti Scam Centre recorded 637,055 public complaints from people who had experienced online fraud. She said West Java recorded the highest number of reports in Indonesia, with 131,445 reports.
“Nationally we have received 637,055 scam reports from the public, and what needs to be highlighted is that West Java recorded the highest number of reports in Indonesia, namely 131,445 reports,” she said at the West Java Regional Police headquarters on Friday (21/8/2026).
She continued that the highest number of public complaints from people who experienced online fraud was in Bekasi City, followed by Bandung City, Bogor Regency, Bekasi Regency and Depok City. There are several online fraud modus operandi used by the perpetrators.
“So those are the five cities and regencies with the highest number of scam reports,” she said.
She continued that the most frequently reported online fraud modus operandi was online shopping scams. The total reported losses reached Rp 1.78 trillion.
“The number of reports we received involving the online shopping scam modus was 113,520 reports, with total reported losses of approximately Rp 1.78 trillion,” she said.
The second most common modus was fake calls, or calls in which the perpetrator claims to be another party. The number of reports was 63,517, with reported losses reaching Rp 2.09 trillion.
Finally, the third most common online fraud modus was investment fraud, with 32,251 reports and total reported losses reaching Rp 2.08 trillion. She said online fraud has developed into an increasingly complex threat.
She said perpetrators continue to adapt by exploiting technology, digital channels and public trust. Therefore, handling efforts are not sufficient if they rely solely on enforcement, but must also be strengthened with prevention measures.
