OJK Reveals How to Prevent Mobile Banking Account Breaches That Can Drain Savings
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has urged the public to heighten their vigilance as the widespread use of mobile banking (m-banking) services is accompanied by a rising risk of cybercrime. Criminals are employing various methods, including personal data theft and phishing scams, to breach customer accounts and drain their savings. To mitigate these risks, the OJK has issued the following guidelines for m-banking users: Never disclose your access code or Personal Identification Number (PIN) to anyone. Do not write down or store your access code or SMS banking PIN in a place easily found by others. Always check transaction details carefully before confirming any transaction. After each transaction, wait a moment until you receive a response confirming the transaction. For every transaction, customers will receive a notification via SMS or email stored in the inbox; scrutinise the notification content and immediately contact the bank if any transaction appears suspicious. If you suspect your PIN is known by someone else, change it immediately. If your GSM SIM card is lost, stolen, or transferred to another party, promptly notify the nearest bank branch or report it to the bank’s call centre. Be cautious of internet applications that may be spam or malware designed to steal personal data for misuse. Avoid conducting internet transactions in public places such as internet cafes or via free Wi-Fi, as your data could be intercepted by others on the same network. Do not forget to log out after completing internet banking sessions. When changing mobile phones, ensure all personal data is completely erased to prevent misuse by the new user.
