OJK Invites PKK Cadres to Become Financial Literacy Ambassadors

The Executive Head of Behavioural Supervision of Financial Services Business Actors, Education, and Consumer Protection at the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Dicky Kartikoyono, is inviting members of the family welfare empowerment team (PKK) to become Financial Literacy Ambassadors. He stated that sound financial literacy is essential to avoid the dangers of consumerist behaviour, as well as the traps posed by illegal online loans (pinjol) and online gambling (judol). “We hope PKK members can become Financial Literacy Ambassadors who not only understand good financial management but are also able to impart knowledge, experience, and healthy habits to their surroundings,” Dicky said during a financial education event in Jakarta on Tuesday. He observed that in the current digital era, there is an immense array of financial product offerings, including loans, paylater schemes, and investments, arriving directly on people’s smartphones. This has led to a growing phenomenon of fear of missing out (FOMO), thereby encouraging consumerist lifestyles. “Protect the future of our families, our children, and the next generation with financial understanding so they do not get caught up in online loans and online gambling. This is where PKK mothers have a very important role,” Dicky said. He noted that a mother holds a strategic role in the national economic resilience system as the manager and guardian of the family’s financial health. Beyond being a financial manager, he noted that some women also act as breadwinners, with 12.72 per cent of households in Indonesia having a woman as the head of the family and the backbone. Women also play a major role in the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, given that 64.5 per cent of MSMEs are managed by women. Globally, 2023 data from the International Labour Organization (ILO) shows that 79.3 per cent of women worldwide perform a dual role as workers while also managing domestic work. “Extraordinary, it means women not only play a role in building families but also act as drivers of community economic activity,” concluded Dicky.
