OJK: Carbon trading opens green investment opportunities for Indonesia
The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Friderica Widyasari Dewi, believes that the implementation of forestry carbon trading policies opens up green investment opportunities for Indonesia.
“This is a manifestation of the rapid work of the Minister of Forestry (Raja Juli Antoni) and his staff in responding to challenges in the forestry sector, particularly through the opening of global investment opportunities via the voluntary carbon market,” Friderica stated in a joint statement with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry in Jakarta on Monday.
According to her, the opening of the voluntary carbon market provides an opportunity for Indonesia to attract sustainable investment while simultaneously increasing the competitiveness of the forestry sector on a global level.
Therefore, she continued, OJK supports the strengthening of the green financing ecosystem to ensure that carbon trading can develop in a credible, transparent, and high-integrity manner.
Previously, the Ministry of Forestry approved the issuance of carbon units through the Non-Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (Non SPE-GRK) scheme.
Friderica noted that the launch of forestry carbon trading marks a historic moment, demonstrating that various strategic agendas can be realised through cross-sector collaboration.
Furthermore, she expressed her appreciation to the Ministry of Forestry for acting swiftly to address the challenges of developing a green economy through the forestry sector.
“I am very happy and delighted to be part of this historic moment. This serves as evidence that in this country, nothing is impossible as long as all institutions are willing to synergise and collaborate, certainly under the strong leadership of the President (Prabowo Subianto), the ministers, and all relevant parties,” said Friderica.
On the other hand, the launch of forestry carbon trading through the Non-SPE-GRK scheme also marks the beginning of carbon trading implementation for projects that are ready for trade.
“The synergy between the Ministry of Forestry, OJK, relevant ministries and agencies, as well as business actors, is considered a vital foundation in building an Indonesian carbon market capable of attracting global investors, providing economic benefits to the community, and maintaining the sustainability of Indonesia’s forests,” she added.
