Bandar Lampung – Bayu Samodro, head of the Directorate for Information Analysis and Crisis Management in the Capital Market, Derivatives and the Carbon Market at the Financial Services Authority (OJK), said that the existence of a carbon market could be a potential avenue to boost the regional economy while safeguarding environmental sustainability.

“In fact, this carbon market has not yet reached retail or individuals; it is more targeted at institutions in the carbon market. But we are continuing to disseminate education about this so that more people understand the carbon market,” Bayu Samodro said in Bandar Lampung on Tuesday.

He said there are now environmentally friendly issuers within the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework that consistently report their performance through sustainability reports as part of carbon-market activities.

“Thus, issuers or publicly-listed companies focused on environmental sustainability will become investment choices for the public because they have succeeded in increasing credibility in reducing emissions. For Lampung, we will try to determine whether there are issuers that have joined the carbon market,” he said.

“In addition, regional governments are being urged to create greener energy. Because reducing emissions can also empower regional economies through carbon trading,” he said.

He added that the effort to increase economic value, among other things by raising regional revenues, can be aligned with protecting the environment and forests.

“With the region’s forest potential, local governments have an obligation to green the forests and degraded land that carry carbon value to support the welfare of the community. We will continue to promote the carbon market and carbon trading, including in Lampung,” he added.
