Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) believes that ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (BNPL) or ‘paylater’ within the finance company industry still possesses significant growth potential, as its share of the outstanding balance relative to total financing has only reached 2.45 per cent.

“The share of the outstanding balance is still very small. This actually presents an opportunity for the BNPL industry to increase its proportion. If it could reach 30 per cent, it would be extraordinary and significantly boost the growth of financing distribution,” said the Head of the OJK Financing Institution Supervision Directorate, Moch. Riezky F. Purnomo, in Jakarta on Thursday.

Based on information from the Financial Information Service System (SLIK), BNPL financing by finance companies grew by 54.65 per cent year-on-year to Rp13.62 trillion as of July 2026.

“I am grateful that Buy Now Pay Later has already shown a sufficiently wide contribution,” he said.

He noted that the number of BNPL users has reached 26.64 million accounts so far. Given Indonesia’s large productive-age population, he believes there remains a massive opportunity for BNPL growth.

Furthermore, the gross non-performing financing (NPF) for BNPL decreased to 3.03 per cent as of July 2026, showing an improvement from the previous month’s figure of 3.09 per cent.
