The Financial Services Authority (OJK) states that PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BNI, has returned funds belonging to the congregation of St Francis of Assisi Church in Aek Nabara, Labuhanbatu Regency, North Sumatra. Regarding this case, OJK has summoned BNI’s directors and management to provide statements on the embezzlement case involving the former Head of the BNI Aek Nabara Cash Office, Andi Hakim Febriansyah.

“Regarding customer funds, to date BNI has conducted verification and realised the return of funds to the customer amounting to Rp 7 billion,” said the Head of the Surveillance and Integrated Financial Services Sector Policy Department of OJK, Agus Firmansyah, in a press release on Saturday, 18 April 2026. OJK has also requested BNI to conduct a comprehensive internal investigation, including a deepening of aspects of compliance, internal controls, and governance.

OJK, according to Agus, has asked BNI to promptly resolve the case by conducting thorough verification and fulfilling customer rights in accordance with applicable provisions. In addition, BNI is required to report developments in handling the matter periodically to the authority. Currently, BNI has taken steps to secure assets suspected to be related to the case.

Meanwhile, the congregation of St Francis of Assisi Church has demanded that BNI return Rp 28 billion in parishioner funds deposited in the form of deposits at BNI Aek Nabara. The Treasurer of the Aek Nabara Parish Credit Union (CU), Sister Natalia Situmorang, said that Andi Hakim Febriansyah abused his position to offer BNI Deposit Investment products with promises of high interest rates of up to 8 percent per year.

The church board then deposited Rp 28 billion, which came from savings of 1,900 cooperative members. “Recently, we only realised that the BNI Deposit Investment is not an official BNI product,” said Natalia Situmorang during a press conference on Friday, 10 April 2026.

Natalia Isura from BNI North Sumatra’s Public Relations stated that BNI has channelled bridging funds to the Aek Nabara Parish CU amounting to Rp 7 billion on 26 March 2026. “The bridging funds were provided in accordance with the Financial Services Authority Regulation after our internal audit verification,” she said.
