BADUNG, KOMPAS – The banking industry must enhance its resilience amid the landscape of economic uncertainty. This can serve as a modality for banks in carrying out their intermediation functions while also promoting the agenda of national economic development.
This is one of the key points conveyed by the Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Friderica Widyasari Dewi and the Executive Head of Banking Supervision at OJK Dian Ediana Rae during the launch of the Roadmap for the Development and Strengthening of Indonesian Banking 2026-2030 in Badung Regency, Bali, Friday (2/10/2026).
Friderica stated that the banking industry is currently facing various challenges, ranging from the global economic slowdown, persistent inflation, to global uncertainties. This dynamic can indirectly affect the risk profile of banking.
“In this context, we need to recognize that banking resilience is no longer a topic of discussion, but rather a necessity, regarding how resilience will be in the future,” he stated while delivering his remarks.
Therefore, he continued, it is important for banking industry players to change their perspective in managing their business, namely through an ecosystem-based approach. This means that banks will become increasingly connected with technology companies, digital platforms, supply chains, and other financial sectors.
To reach that point, according to Friderica, banking transformation is greatly determined by a conducive investment and business climate, adequate data and digital infrastructure, increasingly competent human resources, and cross-sector coordination.
“Indonesia needs a banking system that is able to connect savings with investment, capital, and opportunity, technology with productivity, and financing with sustainable growth,” he said.
We want to ensure the foundation of the banking industry is strengthened by strengthening capital structure, liquidity, governance, risk management, and integrity.
By August 2026, the banking industry recorded a year-on-year credit growth of 13.65 percent, reaching Rp 9,178 trillion. This development was also accompanied by third-party fund collection (DPK) which grew by 10.94 percent year-on-year, amounting to Rp 10,059 trillion.
Bank credit risk remains well-managed, as reflected in the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 2.11 percent. Furthermore, the banking sector’s capital adequacy ratio (CAR) remains adequate at 24.1 percent.
On the same occasion, Dian added that the preparation of a roadmap for the banking industry is a mandate from Law Number 4 of 2026 concerning Amendments to Law No. 4/2023 on the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (P2SK).
In this regard, the direction of development and strengthening of the banking industry is also adjusted to the continuously evolving global dynamics. Furthermore, the banking industry is expected to contribute to economic growth in line with the national development agenda.
Dian explained that the roadmap for the banking industry includes five strategies, encompassing institutional and integrity aspects, modernization of technology and digital resilience, deepening of the financial market and strengthening of intermediation, sustainable finance, as well as integrated licensing and adaptive supervision.
“We want to ensure that the foundation of the banking industry becomes stronger through the enhancement of capital structure, liquidity, governance, risk management, and integrity,” he said.
In this regard, he continued, the OJK will formulate provisions related to the implementation of banking consolidation through capital thresholds. The target moving forward is that the banking industry will be divided into three groups of banks based on their capital, down from the current four groups.
