Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has revealed that 142 rural banks (BPR) and Islamic rural banks (BPRS) have effectively consolidated into 50 BPR/BPRS entities as of 11 March 2026. Meanwhile, 22 BPR/BPRS that will become 6 BPR/BPRS are still in the process at the Ministry of Law, and another 242 BPR/BPRS are under process at OJK. “OJK observes that the trend of declining numbers of BPR will continue in 2026 in line with the implementation of BPR consolidation under the same ownership through business mergers/amalgamations or licence revocations, either through self-liquidation or due to entering resolution bank status (BDR),” said the Executive Head of OJK Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, in a written response in Jakarta on Thursday. Regarding the consolidation of BPR/BPRS, through OJK Regulation No. 7 of 2024, OJK imposes a consolidation obligation on BPR or BPRS under the same ownership and/or control of the same Parent Financial Services Institution (PSP) (group) within one main island or archipelago region through merger or amalgamation schemes at the latest within 2 years or 3 years for regional government-owned BPR or BPRS. Furthermore, as a step to support the implementation of the single presence policy, particularly for BPR/BPRS owned by regional governments, OJK has also sent a letter to regional governments to support strategic steps through consolidation efforts and synergy. This is in accordance with the Roadmap for the Development and Strengthening of BPR/BPR Syariah to strengthen the role of BPR/BPR Syariah/BPD as drivers of the regional economy. In line with the Roadmap, OJK is currently preparing regulations on the capitalisation of BPR/BPRS as an effort to strengthen the BPR/BPRS industry.
