Oil spill in Saigon River

HANOI (AFP): About 110,000 liters of oil spilled into the
Saigon River over the weekend after two carriers collided, police
said on Monday.

The two Vietnamese vessels collided late on April 16 causing a
leak in one which discharged 110,000 liters of machine lubricant
into the river which snakes through Ho Chi Minh City.

Local experts have not yet determined the environmental damage
caused by the spill which has been contained. An investigation
into the collision is pending, Ho Chi Minh City river police
said.

It is the second oil spillage this month. On April 2 a
Vietnamese ship carrying 300,000 liters of oil sank 55 kilometers
off the southern province of Kien Giang, causing a pollution
alert.
