Oil slick cleanup gets underway
SINGAPORE (Reuters): A seven-strong team is tackling the
cleanup of oil on a beach in northern Singapore after a spill
from a ship berthed at one of the island's shipyards, the
Ministry of Environment said yesterday.
About 200 metres of Sembawang Beach has been stained by oil,
the ministry said in a statement.
The cleanup team is removing the oil sediment, and chemicals
have been used to help disperse the slick.
Initial investigations indicated the oil had spilled from the
vessel Rio Coari, which was docked at Sembawang Shipyard.
