Oil and Gas Infrastructure Is Aging, Posing a Challenge; Industry Pushes for a Preventive Maintenance Strategy

JAKARTA — The oil and gas (migas) industry in Indonesia is facing increasingly complex challenges this year, as much of the sector’s oil and gas infrastructure has aged. Hugo Quintanilla, Head of Infrastructure Protection & Repair APAC at Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said much of the oil and gas infrastructure has aged because most assets have been in operation for several decades. That condition makes asset-management strategies increasingly important to safeguard the sustainability of the industry’s operations. “The need for solutions that can extend asset life and improve energy efficiency has become a top priority for companies in supporting the sustainability of the oil and gas industry in Indonesia,” Hugo said at IPA Convex 2026, as quoted in his official statement on Friday 22 May 2026. He believes energy companies need to shift their asset-management approach from a reactive to a preventive strategy to reduce operating costs. He noted that one hour of downtime globally can cause losses of up to nearly US$500,000, or about Rp 8.8 billion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp17,723 per US$1). “With the reliable solutions offered by Henkel, the need for repeated short-term repairs can be significantly reduced, while simultaneously minimising the risk of critical asset failures,” he added. Henkel itself is a consumer goods and industrial technology company that has applied its technology in a range of energy-infrastructure projects in Indonesia, including piping applications in Sumatra and Kalimantan. On the other hand, the need to protect assets is expected to rise as industrial activity and domestic energy consumption grow. “Indonesia not only has great potential, but will continue to develop in the long term, particularly in the energy sector and heavy industry,” said Hugo.
