OIC Condemns Israeli Bill Banning the Adhan

The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the preliminary approval given by the Knesset (Israeli parliament) to a draft law banning the sounding of the adhan. The bill, known as the ‘Muezzin Law’, has sparked sharp criticism for being seen as violating the fundamental rights of Muslims. In an official statement, the OIC asserted that the bill is null and void. The Jeddah-based organisation described Israel’s legislative move as a discriminatory and racist act. The OIC considers the regulation to be a blatant violation of freedom of religion and worship, as well as cultural and religious rights guaranteed under international law and international human rights law. The OIC views the presence of this bill not merely as a technical regulation, but as a dangerous escalation. This policy is considered part of a series of Israeli laws and decisions that systematically target the presence of Palestinian citizens and the Arab and Islamic identity in the region. Furthermore, the OIC stated that banning the adhan constitutes a direct attack on religious rituals and the sanctity of Muslim places of worship. This restriction is deemed contrary to Israel’s obligations under international legal instruments. Responding to this situation, the OIC urged the international community, particularly the United Nations (UN) and its specialised agencies, to take immediate concrete action. The OIC called on the international community to pressure Israel to cease policies that violate the law and to annul all discriminatory legal products. The OIC also stressed the importance of ensuring respect for freedom of worship and the protection of Islamic holy sites. As an occupying power, Israel is demanded to take responsibility for ongoing violations of international law and international legitimacy that continue to occur.
