The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the deployment of drones by the Houthi group directed towards the holy city of Makkah. The OIC denounced the action as a heinous attack.

“The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemns the heinous attack carried out by the Houthi group against the city of Makkah and the Madinah region, as well as their ongoing aggression against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” stated the OIC via its X account, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (16/09/2026).

The Houthi drone attack on the Makkah region occurred on Tuesday (15/09) at 18:50 local time. The attack was successfully intercepted by Saudi air defence systems.

Turki al-Malki, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, stated that the drone was intercepted before entering prohibited airspace, with debris falling south of the city.

The OIC assessed that the attack has caused fear among civilians and violated the sanctity of Makkable and Madinah. The OIC believes the attack on Makkah has provoked sentiments among Muslims worldwide.

“These attacks cause fear among innocent civilians, violate the sanctity of holy sites and mosques, and provoke sentiments among Muslims across the world. The General Secretariat emphasises that the actions carried out by the Houthi terrorist militia against holy sites, mosques, and civilian infrastructure are acts of terrorism that contradict Islamic values as well as international norms, principles, and law,” the statement read.

The OIC emphasised that violations against the sanctity of holy sites are unacceptable and expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia.

“The General Secretariat expresses its full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures taken by the Kingdom to repel the aggressor, maintain the sanctity of the holy sites and the safety of Muslims, and protect its security and sovereignty,” the OIC stated.

Houthi Denial

However, a Houthi official dismissed the Saudi coalition’s report claiming they had shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) heading towards Makkah, calling it a lie.

“The claim regarding the targeting of Makkah is an old lie that has been used before and can no longer deceive anyone,” wrote Hazem al-Assad from the Houthi political bureau on X.

Emergency Warning

As previously reported, Saudi Arabia had issued an emergency warning estimating potential attacks in several regions, including the holy city of Makkah and the second-largest city, Jeddah. This warning followed a series of attacks over the past week by armed groups affiliated with Iran, further drawing the country into the Middle East conflict.

According to Reuters on Tuesday (15/09), the warning was rescinded shortly after being issued. Saudi authorities reported no falling projectiles, nor did any party immediately claim responsibility for the attacks.

This warning covered the widest area since the escalation of conflict last week; sirens in Makkah were heard for the first time during this war in the city, which houses the holiest sites for all Muslims.
