JAKARTA — Lane changing appears to have become a daily sight on motorways. Unfortunately, many drivers still perform this manoeuvre recklessly, without paying attention to driving etiquette and the safety of other road users.

Cutting in suddenly or immediately reducing speed after overtaking are examples of poor behaviour that often trigger disputes and chain-reaction accidents on motorways.

Jusri Pulubuhu, founder of Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting (JDDC), explains that before deciding to change lanes or overtake, drivers must always adhere to three main principles: Necessary, Correct, and Safe.

Once these three principles are satisfied, Jusri outlines the safe steps and standard operating procedures to follow sequentially when wishing to change lane in order to overtake.
