Officials urged to heed complaints
PEKALONGAN, Central Java: Vice President Try Sutrisno called
on government officials yesterday to be responsive to the
people's wishes.
"Never consider people's complaints unimportant because that
attitude will only create the impression that officials turn a
deaf ear to them," he said during a meeting with local officials
and community leaders.
Try said that the authorities should not answer people's
complaints by threatening them with sticks in the way South
Korean security officers did when facing demonstrators.
"There (in South Korea), students and police throw fire bombs
at each other. That should not be imitated here," he said.
Try said that the Indonesian political system favored the
promotion of democracy which is, he said, consistent with local
values. (har)
