Official: Gmail Address Can Now Be Changed Without Creating a New Account
Technology giant Google has officially launched a new feature that allows users to change their Gmail (Google account) email address without having to create a new account or lose old data. Previously, the feature was tested in India since around the end of last year, but it is now being released gradually in the global market, starting from the US market on 31 March 2026. In this update, users who have access can change their Gmail username (the name or part before the @gmail.com ending) directly from the account settings. The process involves opening the Google Account menu, then going to “Personal info” > “Email” > “Google Account email”, and selecting the “Change Google Account email” option to begin. Thus, one account can have up to four associated Gmail addresses, including the old and new ones. Google also confirms that the old email address will not disappear but will remain stored as an alternative address (alias) and cannot be deleted or hidden. That address also cannot be used by others. In the future, the old email address will continue to function as an alternative address (alias). This means users can still log into Google services using either the old or new address. Even if the email address is changed, all messages sent to the old or new address will still arrive in the same inbox. Users can also choose which address to use when sending emails. There is no information yet on when this feature will arrive in the Indonesian market. KompasTekno observations on Wednesday morning indicate that we have not yet been able to change our Google or Gmail email address. Nevertheless, we note that the support page related to changing the Google email address already has an Indonesian language version. On that page, Google only states that the email address change feature will be rolled out gradually to all users.
