Officers nabbed for harassment

JAKARTA: Eight officers from the East Jakarta Police were arrested for sexually harassing sex workers.

City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said the incident occurred on July 25 when some 20 police officers were involved in a raid in the Boker red-light district in East Jakarta.

He said that during the raid, police arrested three women and one man. Two of the women were later identified as sex workers.

According to Tjiptono, a number of police officers groped the two women inside the police truck that transported them from the red-light district to the police station.

Tjiptono, however, denied the officers raped the women.

He said that the eight officers were now being detained at the city police headquarters.

"Internal affairs are now questioning them," he said.

Poultry blood samples tested

TANGERANG: The Tangerang Agricultural Office has sent blood samples from some 250 chickens and pigs to the Bogor Veterinary Research Agency for testing, as part of efforts to stop the spread of bird flu.

The samples were taken from animals in Karawaci, Batu Ceper, Neglasari and Sewan districts.

Sewan is an area where many residents breed pigs in their yards.

"We are taking preventive measures to stop the virus from spreading. It does not matter if the response is a bit late," Tangerang Agricultural Office head Sudirman said on Tuesday.

The central government earlier carried out a small cull of chickens and pigs in Legok and Panongan districts. -- Antara
