Officers involved in incident

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights Violations in Papua (KPP HAM) is to summon six officers involved in the Abepura incident late last year including former Irian Jaya Police chief Brig. Gen. S.Y. Wenas.

Spokesman for the commission Budi Hermawan told Antara that alleged violations occurred after an attack allegedly conducted by the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) on a police station in Abepura district, Jayapura last year.

The other five officers to be summoned are Irian Jaya deputy police chief Brig. Gen. Moersoeti D., chief of the local police Mobile Brigade Sr. Comr. Jhonny Wainal Usman, Jayapura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Daud Sihombing, deputy chief of the Jayapura Police Comr. Alex Sampe and chief of the Abepura Police subprecinct Adj. Comr. Alex Korwa.

The questioning is slated to begin on March 15.

No less than 60 witnesses have been questioned as part of the investigation into the incident in which two policemen, a civilian security guard and three locals were killed.

Police fought off the rebels and arrested several people following the raid, including student activists. (edt)
