Officer's fiancee shot by colleague

MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: A police sergeant from Windesi Police sub-precinct in Manokwari regency allegedly accidentally fired his gun while cleaning the weapon on Monday evening, killing the fiancee of one of his fellow officers.

Antara reported on Tuesday that Second Sgt. Syarifudin accidentally pulled the trigger of his gun at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. The bullet killed Adriana Moses, the girlfriend of First Sgt. Herman.

Officer Syarifudin was cleaning his gun after being deployed to help secure the polls a few hours earlier.

Wounds suffered by the Irianese woman had not been clarified, but police said the tragic incident and any misunderstandings following from it between the two officers had been solved with the help of the chief of the Windesi Police sub-precinct.

Adriana's body was shipped to Manokwari by boat and was expected to arrive at Manokwari Hospital on Tuesday evening for a postmortem examination.

Separately, a member of the military killed a resident of Gresi district in Jayapura regency and seriously injured another on Monday evening.

The dead victim was identified as Robby, 22, while his wounded friend was identified as Jan Piet Taime, also 22.

According to witnesses, the two were shot by Pvt. Hadi Rianto from the Garuda I Land Task Force after failing to stop their pick-up at Sabeyap T-junction in Kemtuk district.

Locals said the two may have been unable to halt their vehicle on the steep road.

Jan Piet Taime was still receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Police could not be reached for comment.
