Officers charged with corruption
MALAYSIA: Eleven Malaysian law enforcement officers have been charged with corruption involving illegal immigrants in the past three years, a minister said in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Adnan Tengku Mansor told Parliament that the charges applied to a period between 1999 and last month, the Bernama national news agency reported.
In the same period, 37 people were charged with offering bribes to officials to help illegal immigrants, he said.
Malaysia, one of Southeast Asia's wealthiest countries, is a magnet for immigrants from poor, neighboring Indonesia. An estimated 600,000 illegal workers are in Malaysia, most of them Indonesians. --AP
