Officer wins in Malang race

JAKARTA (JP): A low-ranking city military officer has won first place in a 10-kilometer marathon race, and third place in a 42-kilometer marathon race held in Malang, East Java recently.

Private Sutarman reported his wins to the City Military Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Sutiyoso during the weekly ceremony at headquarters yesterday.

He then handed over the two cups, from the East Java governor and the provincial police chief respectively, to his supervisor, a common procedure in the military.

Sutarman has a string of wins in marathon races, including some held overseas, such as in France in 1990, and Tokyo in 1994.

In his speech, Sutiyoso hoped that officers like Sutarman could effectively use their limited spare time for exercises in order to reap more reputable awards. (bsr)
