Offering Peaceful Solution, Iran Reportedly Proposes Safe Shipping Route Through Omani Waters in Strait of Hormuz
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DUBAI – Iran has submitted a new proposal regarding shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran is opening the possibility of allowing ships to pass safely through Omani waters.
This proposal was presented in talks with the United States. Sources familiar with the negotiations stated that the step depends on achieving an agreement to prevent new conflicts.
Under this scheme, Iran would not interfere with ships transiting through Omani waters. However, Tehran would retain control over its own territorial waters.
This move is seen as a signal of Iran easing its position. Previously, Tehran had floated aggressive ideas, including plans to impose fees on ships passing through the strait.
That idea drew widespread rejection. The global shipping industry deemed the policy a violation of international maritime conventions.
A Reuters source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue, said Iran might be willing to allow ships to use the other side of the narrow strait in Omani waters without any interference from Tehran.
“We welcome any steps to allow safe ship transit through the established traffic separation scheme,” said a spokesperson for the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations’ shipping agency.
The Strait of Hormuz route has long been regulated through an international traffic separation scheme. Around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through this vital route.
