Obstacles for Trump Should He Wish to Continue the Iran War
The authority of United States (US) President Donald Trump to continue the war with Iran must have congressional approval. The US House of Representatives approved a resolution proposed by the Democratic Party to limit Trump’s authority regarding the war with Iran.
Reported by Reuters news agency on Thursday (4/6/2026), the resolution was approved through a vote with a result of 215 in favour versus 208 against. During the voting held on Wednesday (3/6) local time, four Republican members defected by joining the Democratic Party to support the measure. This is a rare bipartisan rejection of Trump’s war policy.
The vote is largely symbolic. The reason is that even though it has passed the House, the resolution must still gain approval from the Senate, which is currently controlled by the Republican Party. Even if it is successfully passed by the Senate, Trump could still veto the regulation. To override a presidential veto, a two-thirds majority support in both chambers of Congress is required.
The resolution is the House’s fourth attempt to limit the president’s war powers since the war with Iran broke out last February. The three previous resolutions failed in the House of Representatives by increasingly narrow vote margins.
Until now, the US and Iran have yet to reach a peace agreement to end the war. Trump has said he wants to meet with Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
“I would like to meet with him, and we will probably meet sometime down the road, depending on how everything works out,” Trump told the New York Post’s ‘Pod Force One’ podcast, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (3/6/2026).
Mojtaba Khamenei was reportedly injured as a result of a combined attack carried out by the US and Israel at the end of February. The attack also killed Mojtaba’s father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump said the US side has received information regarding Mojtaba’s current condition. He said the Iranian supreme leader was seriously injured.
“I understand he is not doing too well,” Trump said.
