Jakarta — The blocking of an account belonging to the Coordinator of the Alliance of People Who Care About the Nation (AMPB) by Bank Mandiri has drawn public attention. Banking observer Paul Sutaryono has urged the public to respond to the matter calmly and to trust the process to the applicable legal provisions and banking governance.

Paul assessed that Bank Mandiri’s status as a publicly listed company means its activities and policies are under the supervision of various parties. He considered this position to be part of the mechanism for maintaining accountability and public trust in the banking industry.

“Bank Mandiri has gone public, which means it is owned by the public. A bank that has become a publicly listed company (Tbk) will be watched by even more parties,” Paul said when contacted by Republika in Jakarta on Monday (24/8/2026).

According to Paul, Bank Mandiri has a basis for carrying out the blocking. In the banking system, he continued, there are already provisions regarding the parties that have the authority to block customer accounts.

“In fact, there are already provisions on which parties are authorised to block accounts at a bank,” Paul said.

Therefore, Paul stressed the importance of every bank implementing the applicable provisions when taking steps related to customer accounts. Compliance with regulations, he said, is an important part of maintaining the principles of good corporate governance (GCG).

“Therefore, the bank must comply with these rules. This is part of good corporate governance (GCG) and the principle of compliance,” Paul continued.

Amid public attention on the case, Paul also asked the public not to rush to conclusions that could trigger excessive concern about the safety of funds in the banking system. Paul believes the public is increasingly able to filter information and is not easily influenced by news whose truth cannot yet be confirmed.

“But there is no need to worry that a rush on money will occur. The public is increasingly smart, so they will not be influenced by hoaxes,” Paul said.
