Observer: PSSI Should Not Let the Young Talents of the Indonesian U17 National Team Stagnate
The performance of the Indonesian U17 national team in the 2026 AFC U-17 Asian Cup has sparked various reactions. The Garuda Muda team had to settle for finishing last in Group B and failed to secure a ticket to the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
However, national football observer Kesit B Handoyo has asked the public not to rush to judge the young Indonesian players. He argues that these players are still in a developmental stage and need serious attention to ensure their potential is not lost.
He stressed that inconsistency in performance at a young age is very normal. These teenagers are still finding their playing style, competitive spirit, and identity as professional footballers. Performance at the youth level should not cause the development process to stop. In fact, it is during this phase that young players need the most support to ensure their mentality and quality continue to develop.
Without regular competition, it will be difficult for players’ abilities to develop consistently. He stated that these players are the future assets of Indonesian football. Therefore, development should not stop just because of failure in one tournament.
“They are the foundation for the national team because some of them may still be eligible to play for the U17 national team, but some may not and will play in the next age group, U19 and so on,” he said.
He also asked all parties to accept the reality that the Indonesian U17 national team was not yet able to meet its target in the 2026 AFC U-17 Asian Cup. He stressed that the results in the tournament should not cause the players to lose the opportunity to develop.
“I think they should continue to receive attention, and it must be acknowledged that they failed, but these are the players who are still developing,” said Kesit.
