Observer: Polemic over Proposed Rp60,000 Parking Tariff in Jakarta Confuses Residents
Urban planning observer Yayat Supriyatna has asked the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and the DPRD to clarify the polemic over the plan for parking tariffs of up to Rp60,000 in DKI Jakarta. The uncertainty over the amount of the parking tariff is considered potentially confusing for the public.
“Do not let these wild discourses go anywhere and confuse the public. Whether it is reasonable or not depends,” Yayat told Media Indonesia on Wednesday (26/8).
According to him, the proposal for a parking tariff in Jakarta of Rp60,000 should first have its origins explained. The government, he said, needs to disclose the basis for the calculation, as well as the locations where the tariff would apply.
“Where does the Rp60,000 figure come from? Who proposed it? If it is not official, it should be traceable. As long as there is no certainty, do not engage in discourse,” he stressed.
He said that the setting of parking tariffs should take zoning into account. High tariffs, according to him, would be relevant to apply in areas with high density and economic activity, but would not be appropriate if applied uniformly.
Areas such as Senopati in South Jakarta, which has developed into a pocket of businesses, restaurants and cafes, are considered to have different characteristics from residential areas. However, he reminded that excessively high tariffs must still have their impact on business operators calculated.
“If the area has changed into a business area, it is reasonable that the roads are limited and parking is expensive. But the implication is that business owners could lose out because expensive tariffs make people reluctant to come,” he explained.
Therefore, he said, before setting parking tariffs, the government needs to map the public’s ability to pay and the local economy.
