Observer: National Police Chief's Visit Prioritises Stability Over Sectoral Ego
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Senior political analyst Boni Hargens said the visit of National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to the Attorney General’s Office and TNI headquarters was a step prioritising national stability above sectoral interests.
“The National Police Chief and the entire Bhayangkara ranks are committed to safeguarding the integrity of the legal and national security ecosystem in a comprehensive manner,” Boni said in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Boni argued that the episode reflects the complexity of inter-agency governance in Indonesia, where jurisdictional boundaries often become points prone to friction, especially in handling large-scale corruption cases.
According to him, the naming of a former senior Attorney General’s Office official as a suspect by the National Police’s Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortastipidkor) was a real test of the professionalism and independence of both institutions.
On the one hand, he said, law enforcement must proceed without discrimination. On the other, coordination and communication between agencies remain an imperative that cannot be ignored in order to maintain the cohesion of the system of government as a whole.
Accordingly, Boni said the police chief’s visit was proof of mature leadership capable of bridging both demands simultaneously.
He said the visit was not merely an ordinary courtesy call, but a strategic manoeuvre carried out with full situational awareness.
Boni specifically appreciated the goodwill and initiative shown by the police chief, calling it the action of a true statesman who places national stability above sectoral ego.
He said the move was an effective strategy to quell public speculation of a clash between institutions that had emerged amid the investigation into a corruption case involving a former senior Attorney General’s Office official.
Beyond President Prabowo’s direct instruction to build cross-institutional synergy, he said, the police chief’s initiative went beyond mere procedural compliance, representing proactive and visionary leadership.
The former member of the ANTARA News Agency’s Supervisory Board also appreciated the police chief’s statement that cohesion between the TNI and the National Police was not merely an internal institutional matter, but a foundation determining whether various government policies and programmes could be implemented effectively on the ground.
“At a time when relations between agencies are under public scrutiny, the police chief’s statement carries significant political weight while also serving to balance the narrative in the public sphere,” he said.
Therefore, he continued, the visit was not purely ceremonial but laden with strategic calculation to defuse the issue of institutional friction that could have wide-ranging effects on national stability.
The police chief’s visit took place amid heating inter-agency dynamics, making it one of the significant events in the national political and legal constellation.
The activities on Monday (13 July) were divided into two strategically interrelated agendas. First, a meeting with TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto and his entire staff at TNI headquarters.
Second, the delegation continued to the main building of the Attorney General’s Office for a direct courtesy meeting with Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin.
Both visits sent a strong signal that the National Police is working to rebuild bridges of communication between agencies at a time when institutional relations are being tested by complex legal dynamics.
