Executive Director of the Centre for Energy and Mining Law Studies (PUSHEP) Bisman Bhaktiar stated that the groundbreaking of the Masela Block is a phenomenal step and holds significant meaning for Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry, as it has been delayed for almost three decades. “The benefits are certainly numerous, both for energy security and the economy, which will definitely increase state revenue,” Bisman said when contacted in Jakarta on Friday. He noted that the Masela Block groundbreaking, carried out by the government, demonstrates investment certainty and operational continuity. He added that the Masela Block will become one of the largest sources of natural gas, capable of supplying industrial needs and other energy requirements. “Once it is producing, it can reduce energy imports and maintain national gas supply,” he said. Furthermore, Bisman stated that the Masela Block has the potential to drive economic growth in eastern Indonesia, create jobs, and is strategic for strengthening Indonesia’s position as a natural gas producer in the Asian region. The Abadi Masela LNG project is projected to become one of the largest energy industry centres in eastern Indonesia, aimed at strengthening national energy security and promoting equitable development up to the eastern region of the Republic of Indonesia. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the groundbreaking, to be conducted by President Prabowo Subianto in the Tanimbar Islands Regency, Maluku, marks the start of one of the largest energy investments in Indonesia’s history. “The presence of this project will also encourage the growth of supporting industries, expand business opportunities for MSMEs, and open up extensive employment opportunities by prioritising local workers from Maluku and the Tanimbar Islands Regency,” Prasetyo said on Thursday (17/7). The Abadi Masela National Strategic Project (PSN) is being developed by INPEX Masela Ltd together with Pertamina and Petronas, with an investment value of approximately US$20.9 billion. The project is designed to produce 9.5 million tonnes of LNG per year (MTPA), channel domestic piped gas of 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), and produce approximately 35,000 barrels of condensate per day. Prasetyo said the project is entering the construction phase after a development process spanning nearly three decades since the contract was signed in 1998.
