Observer: Issue Against Former Jampidsus is 'Corruptor Fights Back'

Jakarta - Criminal law observer Kamilov Sagala has assessed that the negative narrative recently directed at former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah is a form of counter-attack, or ‘corruptor fights back’, from parties who feel aggrieved by law enforcement. In a statement received in Jakarta on Monday, Kamilov argued that the issue of alleged asset discoveries circulating in the public sphere is being exploited by certain groups to build negative opinions against the Adhyaksa Corps. The term ‘corruptor fights back’ is a socio-political phrase that did not originate from a single figure or academic concept, but rather emerged from the dynamics of the anti-corruption movement in Indonesia. The term is widely used to describe situations where corruption perpetrators or groups threatened by disclosures launch counter-attacks to weaken, criminalise, or discredit law enforcement officials and anti-corruption activists. ‘This attack is seen by many as inseparable from Febrie’s track record of firmness in uncovering mega corruption scandals in the country,’ he said. According to Kamilov, this phenomenon often arises when law enforcement agencies are handling major corruption cases. He assessed that the Attorney General’s Office’s achievements in tackling corruption over recent years have led the institution to face various forms of pressure, including through the shaping of public opinion. Kamilov also opined that the developing issues could be used to influence public perception of the prosecutorial efforts. He stated that the most appropriate way to respond to such accusations is to continue carrying out the law enforcement process consistently and professionally. ‘This is an effort to stem the success that has been achieved so far. It is as if a great achievement built over years is being shaken in an instant through propaganda,’ he said. He added that if law enforcement officials can prove every case through a transparent judicial process based on evidence, public trust will be maintained. Previously, a former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes with the initials FA was detained for 20 days in a suspected money laundering case. His legal counsel, Febri Diansyah, stated that his client would be cooperative and respect the ongoing legal process.
