Observer: BRAN must optimise the resolution of agrarian conflicts
The National Agrarian Reform Agency (BRAN) is expected to implement the Agrarian Reform Regulation Law to resolve protracted agrarian conflicts, according to land observer Iwan Nurdin from the Agrarian Reform Consortium.
“This agency is obliged to implement the law to resolve agrarian reform. If it is not optimal, it is not the fault of the law, because the law is very clear,” Iwan stated when contacted in Jakarta on Friday.
Iwan noted that the new agency overseeing Agrarian Reform represents great hope for the public, particularly those facing long-standing agrarian issues. He added that BRAN has clear duties and functions under the Agrarian Reform Regulation Law, and is therefore expected to maximise the role mandated by the legislation.
According to Iwan, the handling of agrarian conflicts has not been maximal thus far, as various institutions have only provided complaint services without offering concrete resolutions. “BRAN was created because the implementation of agrarian reform has been ineffective. Why is it ineffective? Agrarian reform is spread across many agencies, and each serves only as a place to file reports,” he said.
Iwan added that with the establishment of BRCA, all authorities related to agrarian reform will fall under the umbrella of this new agency, formed following the Agrarian Reform Regulation Law.
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Police Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo as the Head of the National Agrarian Reform Agency (BRAN) at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.
“I shall be loyal to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and shall execute all laws and regulations with the utmost integrity in my service to the nation and state,” said Dedi during his oath of office, administered by President Prabowo.
Dedi was inaugurated based on Presidential Decree Number 105P of 2026 regarding the Dismissal and Appointment of the Chief of Staff to the President and the Head of the National Agrarian Reform Agency, signed by President Prabowo on 30 September 2026. Prior to this appointment, Dedi served as the Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police.
