Public policy observer Mayor Haristanto has expressed appreciation for the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) for their prompt assistance during disaster conditions, including recent events in East Nusa Tenggara.

According to him, this proactive approach demonstrates that the SPPG’s value extends beyond its routine nutritional functions to include significant social benefits during emergencies. “Such a function shows that infrastructure built for a public programme can provide additional benefits when situations arise that require a rapid response,” Mayor stated in a briefing received in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that when an earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara in August 2026, the government deployed SPPG units around the affected areas to help meet the food requirements of the community and vulnerable groups. In the coordination of disaster management, it was reported that 71 SPOG units could be utilised to assist with the food needs of displaced persons.

In Nagekeo Regency, for instance, Mayor revealed that 11 Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) kitchens assisted in providing ready-to-eat meals for those displaced by the earthquake. This support helped the local government meet the food needs of the affected population. “We are grateful that the emergency-responsive SPPG helped distribute food to those affected by the NTT earthquake,” he said.

Turning to the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme, he identified clear benefits, particularly when provided to those in genuine need. However, he raised several notes regarding its implementation, with a primary concern being the accuracy of its targeting. He believes the programme will be more effective if it truly reaches the intended vulnerable groups.

Furthermore, Mayor identified opportunities for the programme if it actively involves the community and small businesses. “The involvement of MSMEs can ensure that the benefits of the programme are felt not only by the food recipients but also by the community members within the supply chain,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Sudaryono, has emphasised that SPPG units located near earthquake-affected areas in NTT must remain on standby and adjust their services to assist in meeting the food needs of the affected population. “SPPG units directly impacted by the disaster must prioritise safety and report their condition to relevant authorities, while the nearest operational units can adjust their services, including assisting with food provision for the affected community and vulnerable groups in the disaster area,” he stated in a briefing confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sudaryono also instructed all BGN and SPPG personnel to follow established directives and refrain from making decisions based on individual assumptions.
