An object thrown during a demonstration outside the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani last weekend is an improvised explosive device capable of causing serious injury or death.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that the NYPD bomb disposal team determined the object was not “a fake device or smoke bomb”.

Tisch noted that a second object is still under investigation.

Two men were arrested at the scene and remain in custody.

Mayor Mamdani stated that the protest was organised by Jake Lang, a white supremacist supporter, outside Gracie Mansion, the official NYC mayoral residence. Mamdani said the demonstration was rooted in “fanaticism and racism”.

“Hatred based on prejudice has no place in New York City,” Mamdani said.

“What happened next was far more alarming,” said the New York Mayor, referring to the object thrown at the protesters.

“Violence during a protest will not be tolerated,” he stated.

Mamdani described the presence of the explosive device as “despicable and entirely contrary to who we are” and thanked the swift response of law enforcement officials.

The NYPD is investigating the case jointly with the FBI through the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Tisch said.
